Andris Freibergs, the founding personality of modern Latvian scenography, received the Scenography Mentor Award at Prague Quadrennial 2015 while his students at the Department of Stage Design in the Art Academy of Latvia were awarded the Gold Medal for Promising Student Talent for their participation in the student exhibition called ‘Latvia: The Beginning’. Here, Reinis Suhanovs, one of the most recognized contemporary Latvian scenographers, himself a recipient of the Gold Medal for the Promising Student Talent at the 2007 PQ, who studied with Andris Freibergs, reflects on the ways that Freibergs’ teaching methods and processes have influenced his own approach to scenography.
